Adsorption of long polymers dissolved in a semi-dilute solution of shorter chains

چکیده
The adsorption of dilute long polymers of length N dissolved in a semi-dilute solution of shorter chains of length P is considered using a scaling approach. The short chains themselves are considered as non-adsorbableTwo qualitatively different phase diagrams in the concentration adsorption-strength diagram are predicted depending on the value of N/P~. An overall concentration and chain length controlled adsorption cross-over may be found. An ideal adsorption regime is possible for N < P~. The scaling of the radius of gyration of the adsorbed chains as well as the concentration profile are derived in the various adsorption regimes. The surface concentration effects of the adsorbed long chains are calculated from the condition of chemical equilibrium between the surface and the bulk. The plateau adsorption density~ which may be considered as the maximum amount of adsorbed polymers, may be controlled by the overall bulk concentration of the bimodal system. This provides an easy way to control the polymer surface concentration.

Polyelectrolytes in Solution and at Surfaces
This chapter deals with charged polymers (polyelectrolytes) in solution and at surfaces. The behavior of polyelectrolytes is markedly different from that of neutral polymers. In bulk solutions, i.e. disregarding the surface effect, there are two unique features to charged polymers: first, due to the presence of long-ranged electrostatic repulsion between charged monomers, the polymer conformati...

Single-molecule fluorescence imaging of adsorption onto initially bare surfaces shows that polymer chains need not localize immediately after arrival. In a system optimized to present limited adsorption sites (quartz surface to which polyethylene glycol (PEG) chains adsorb from aqueous solution at pH 8.2), we find that some chains diffuse back into bulk solution and readsorb at some distance aw...
متن کاملEvaluation of adsorption efficiency of activated carbon/chitosan composite for removal of Cr (VI) and Cd (II) from single and bi-solute dilute solution
The aim of this study was to evaluate the adsorption capacity of the novel coated activated carbon by chitosan for removal of Cr (VI) and Cd (II) ions from single and bi-solute dilute aqueous solutions. In addition, the adsorption abilities of activated carbon (AC), chitosan (CH) and chitosan / activated carbon composite (CHAC) have been compared. Adsorption studies were performed in a batch sy...

متن کاملAlignment of particles in sheared viscoelastic fluids.
We investigate the shear-induced structure formation of colloidal particles dissolved in non-Newtonian fluids by means of computer simulations. The two investigated visco-elastic fluids are a semi-dilute polymer solution and a worm-like micellar solution. Both shear-thinning fluids contain long flexible chains whose entanglements appear and disappear continually as a result of Brownian motion a...
